Can I drink alcohol during pregnancy?

It’s party season! There’s loads of alcohol around! But actually there’s alcohol available all through the year and this can be an issue when you’re pregnant. Did you know that the UK has the highest number in Europe of pregnant women who continue to drink? And older, more educated women seem to be the worst culprits! Now on every bottle of alcohol you will see a stop sign with a pregnant woman inside it. And yet we seem to ignore this sign! Research shows that alcohol does pass the placenta, which means it does get to the baby. And for a baby, one of the very last organs to develop is the liver. And we need the liver to process alcohol. So research shows there is no safe amount to drink during pregnancy. In fact, what’s safe is zero! Now a lot of people don’t realise that they’re pregnant and continue to drink and that happened to me in my pregnancies. But my theory is that if you realise you’re swimming in croc-infested water, you’ll get out! So if this news is new information to you, or you have just found out you’re pregnant, stop drinking alcohol! Some tips for this Christmas if you’re only early in pregnancy and you’re not ready to tell everybody yet, is offer to drive, or have a sneaky word with the barman and make your cocktail, a mocktail, or you can get things like ‘Nosecco’ I know it doesn’t taste quite the same but it will at least hide the fact that you’re pregnant! Whatever you decide to do this Christmas, enjoy yourself and remember that there’s no safe amount of alcohol to drink in pregnancy.
