Dr. Loudon on the debate over Down syndrome and abortion

>>HAVE BASICALLY ERADICATED>>Martha: IT HAS BEEN A CONTROVERSIAL PRACTICE IN ICELAND FOR YEARS. A TEST SHOWS A HIGHER RISK FOR DOWNS SYNDROME. MANY OF THE TESTS HAVE FALSE POSITIVES IN THEM IN THE EARLY STAGES OF PREGNANCY. SO ICELAND HAS A 100% TERMINATION RATE AFTER THE SCREENING INDICATES THAT COMPARES TO THE UNITED STATES WHICH HAS A RATE OF 67%. IT’S A STATISTIC THAT THE VATICAN IS SPEAKING OUT ABOUT. THEY WOULD LIKE TO SEE THAT NUMBER DROP TO ZERO. EARLIER THIS WEEK, THE PARENTS OF DOWNS SYNDROME TOLD THE U.N. CALLING OUT COUNTRIES LIKE ICELAND AND THE U.S., THE U.S. HAS LAWS TO PROTECT THE EGGS OF BALD EAGLES BUT NOT THOSE CHILDREN WITH DOWNS SYNDROME. GINA, THANKS FOR BEING HERE WITH US. WE HAVE A PICTURE OF YOUR SON, DANIEL, WHO IS BEAUTIFUL ON THE SCREEN RIGHT NOW. IT’S ALSO WORTH POINTING OUT, THE GERBER BABY THIS YEAR FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME IS A BABY WHO WAS BORN WITH DOWNS SYNDROME. THERE HE IS, THERE’S LITTLE LUCAS WHO IS ADORABLE. A PRETTY STRONG STATEMENT ON THEIR PART, GINA.>>IT IS. WE HAD A MISS U.S.A. CONTESTANT THIS YEAR WHEN HAD DOWNS SYNDROME. SHE’S BEAUTIFUL. PEOPLE WITH DOWNS SYNDROME ARE ACCOMPLISHING MAJOR THINGS. THAT’S WHY I’M GLAD YOU’RE COVERING THIS STORY AND ALSO THAT FOXNEWS.COM PRINTED MY THIS STORY IS CULMINATING IN WHAT IS A CULTURAL CLASH WHEN WE ARE TALKING IN TERMS OF ERADICATION OF AN ENTIRE GROUP OF PEOPLE THAT DO NOTHING, INFLICT NO HARM. NAME ONE TIME WHERE YOU’VE HEARD OF ANYONE WITH DOWN’S SYNDROME HURTING ANYONE ELSE? IT DOESN’T HAPPEN. WE TALK ERADICATE THEM. WE TALK ABOUT ERADICATING PESTS FROM OUR HOUSE AND DEADLY DISEASES. WE DON’T TALK ABOUT ERADICATING PEOPLE. YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE CATHOLIC TO BE PRO LIFE AND REALIZE THAT ADOPTION LIKE MY FAMILY AND I ENJOY WITH MY SON, SAMUEL, IS A MUCH BETTER OPTION THAN ABORTION OR CERTAINLY ANY SORT OF ERADICATION.>>ONE OF THE THINGS THAT HAS PROMOTED THIS IN SOME WAYS ARE THESE TESTINGS. THE TESTING THAT IS DONE ON CHILDREN. WHEN YOU’RE PREGNANT, YOU HAVE THE TEST. I HAD ONE THAT INDICATED THE CHILD MIGHT DEVELOP INTO A CHILD WITH DOWNS SYNDROME. DIDN’T HAPPEN. HOWEVER, THAT IS THE STAGE AT WHICH SO MANY PEOPLE ARE MAKING THIS CHOICE. I KNOW A LOT OF PEOPLE DON’T HAVE THE TESTS ANYMORE BECAUSE THEY DON’T WANT THAT INFORMATION BECAUSE IT’S NOT GOING TO CHANGE HOW THEY FEEL. BUT IT’S SO SAD WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT THE FACT THAT SOMEONE THAT, YOU KNOW — I CAN’T IMAGINE WHY SOMEBODY WOULDN’T WANT TO WELCOME A DOWNS BABY IN THEIR LIVES. THE POSITIVES ARE OFTEN FALSE TO BEGIN WITH.>>LET ME SPEAK TO THOSE FAMILIES OUT THERE THAT HAVE A TEST THAT COMES BACK THAT IS POSITIVE. MY — THE LADY THAT HAD MY SON, SHE PLANNED TO ABORT HIM MORE THAN ONE TIME. WE’RE VERY CLOSE FRIENDS NOW. SHE WOULD TELL YOU, IT’S THE BEST CHOICE SHE EVER MADE TO GIVE HIM LIFE. I WAS IN LINE FOR TEN YEARS TO ADOPT SAMUEL. PEOPLE OF THE PEOPLE THAT HAD A CHILD WITH DOWNS SYNDROME WANTED ONE. FAMILIES LIKE MINE WERE WAITING FOR YEARS. THERE’S FAMILIES OUT THERE WAITING AND I PERSONALLY INVITE ANYBODY FACING THIS SITUATION AND DOESN’T WANT TO PARENT THE CHILD TO CONTACT US. WE UNDERSTAND THAT EVERYBODY HAS A DIFFERENT WALK OF LIFE. I CAN TELL YOU, THE JOY THAT IS WRAPPED UP IN OUR SON, SAMUEL

  1. Having worked with downs syndrome cases for over 20 years, I can say that there is not a more lovable person that humans can produce, and not a more defiant and mean spirited either. It's all in how they are raised and what kind of personalities the parents have. Generally downs syndrome people will maintain a loving child like personality that keeps on giving until their last breath, but then there is the other end of the spectrum when they are raised by aggressive burnt out parents who have nothing to give but angry words and short tempers. I do not think you should end a life just for downs syndrome alone…CASE CLOSED!

  2. This should be up to the parents, they shouldn’t be pushed to make a decision they don’t feel comfortable with, be it to or not to abort. It’s not fair to shame someone that knows that they would be limited in raising a child with any special needs. At the same time some parents may think it cruel to bring a life into this world that will somehow suffer, kids with special needs have higher rates of physical/sexual abuse than any other kids.

  3. Amen. Amen. I say to you. https://youtu.be/Vsj037Dva6A

  4. This is sick! Do you really want someone to suffer for the rest of their life? Not only are they going to have a very low quality of life, but they will not be nearly as productive in our society. At least you could experiment on a rat, you can't say the same for those suffering with Down Syndrome. Save your pure bread Aryan children. Reject those whom will be a burden to your daily life, and others. It's not all about you, other's will be affected by your decision.
Do you really want these people to bread? Pretty soon, our communities will be infested by these kinds of people, should you choose to allow them to exist. I hope you make the right choice, your fellow humans do too, not to mention your unborn child.

  5. Not true, some down syndrome children are violent. If there was a pill that would prevent down syndrome would you take it? My supposition, most people would take it because they don't want down syndrome child. Down syndrome is a genetic anomaly that should be eliminated from society. They are a huge cost to society and there is no reason to have this burden if you treat the genetic anomaly at stage 1. I agree with ICELAND it's inhumane to have children with down syndrome because they have so many medical problems and learning disabilities. It doesn't make sense for a society to encourage this genome. Now if a down syndrome person is born, then we have a responsibility to care for this person. Let's not create genetic freaks for our entertainment. That would be cruel as in "Blade Runner".

  6. Your naive actions have metaphysical consequences ! Intelligence is fragile, therefore we ought to focus our efforts more on what causes degeneracy, in order to prevent these weird anomalies from happening, instead of just pretending that blindness has any relation to faith ..

  7. Every Individual with Down Syndrome I've ever met have been very kind and sweet. Every single one of them had a talent in which they excelled beyond Non-D.S.

  8. Well it’s a genetic disease and many of these ppl can’t live on their own but need caretakers the rest of their life eventually becoming property of the state which flat out isn’t efficient $$

  9. I certainly endorse adopting those unwanted children who were given life. I do not endorse any society that supports bringing unwanted children into this world. The effects of adoption are well known. Adopted children are often wracked with guilt through not understanding why their parents didn't love them. This carries on throughout their lives. Adoption is sometimes the answer and sometimes not. Same with abortion.

  10. I have a daughter with a terminal disorder called Trisomy 18 ( down syndrome is also called Trisomy 21 ). She was given two weeks to live, she is now 7😁. With that said, Fox is giving false hope to say the least. While Down Syndrome is not terminal, the two others are ( Trisomy 13 & 18 ). We have met many parents who lost their child during child birth or a few days/weeks later. Not every one is strong enough for that, I seen it ruined my friend's life as he turned to drugs after his daughter passed away. It is easy to say to someone to NOT have an abortion if the test comes back that there is a strong chance your child can have this death penalty of a disorder when you don't have to suffer the pain of losing a child. Shame on all of them. My daughter is 7 and I don't know how long she will be with us, but I still cry every time I think her not being here. Don't get me wrong, we are VERY grateful to God and all her doctors and nurses. But we are a lot luckier than 98% of parents who have children with the same disorder my daughter has. God bless every parent who ever had or has to deal with a terminal ill child.

  11. If god does not exist everything is permitted. This was what Nietzsche warned us about; that once you take out religion, you can of course still be a good person but you may not be able to hold on to its premises. Morality becomes extremely more complicated. This case study is a good example.

  12. I've noticed that the parents raising Down Syndrome or other special children tend to be much nicer than regular parents. They just have higher levels of compassion for people of all ages. I'm jealous that all our kids were born normal. I refused the testing, so they wouldn't pressure me to abort. My sister had the testing which initially came back positive for possible Down Syndrome, so she risked miscarriage in getting the 2nd level test which requires a very painful sticking of a long needle into the belly and into the uterus… Amniocentesis. Many babies are born premature or die from the trauma this test causes. At the time, it was a 5% miscarriage rate. And her baby turned out to be perfectly normal anyway… 22 now and just married. Dealing with inconvenient people helps people become more compassionate. We are all inconvenient for others at times, sometimes long term, sometimes short. When the ball gets rolling to get rid of inconvenient people, it might just keep going until you get a society like ancient Greece, terrible! No society can keep going like that. It collapses.

  13. If these down syndrome individuals are going to be a burden on tax payers for the rest of their lives its better to get rid of them unless the parents sign a legal document that they will not demand and sue the government to pay for their genetically defective offspring.

  14. It is a personal choice. It should be. Early (1st trimester) termination should remain legal, particularly for genetic disorders, rape, incest, etc.

After the 1st trimester, all abortion should be illegal. It is murder.

  15. Maybe someone should go back to genetics class. Down Syndrome is the inability of a chromosome to divide. It is not a trait that is passed from parent to child like hair color to ear size. This is genocide. Many children have great talents and ability to love and be loved and work and do whatever. What a scary Third Reich mentality.

  16. Fake "doctor." She lied about her academic credentials. Fits perfectly with all the other fake "doctors" on the undisputed champion of fake news, Faux News Channel.

  17. No parent I have ever met in my life ever said to me that they were lucky to have a child or children with severe developmental disabilities. No parents has ever told me they were so proud that there child is in special education. Most people with down syndrome will not live past their sixties. 98% of them have the intellectual understanding of a toddler with the physical characteristics of a frail geriatric. Most of them are what is called "custodial people", meaning special care for them will be from their cradle to their grave. If human beings cannot cure this terrible disease then they should at least prevent other children from coming into this world with it. As immoral and Hitlerian as that sounds, it is far more unethical to allow the suffering of both parent and child continue for years to come.
