VBAC vs repeat caesarean:
choice and implications for mother and baby And we’ve just finished
the study looking at the choices around vaginal birth
after cesarean section. And what became
really clear, is: women who chose to have
vaginal birth after cesarean came from what we called
a mother/birth framework. Their philosophy was:
“What’s good for me and makes me
healthy and happy, is good for my baby,
because I will mother better.” The women who chose
repeat cesarean often came from a child/birth framework
which was: “My job as a good mother
is to sacrifice myself for my baby.” Society very much sits
on a side of the child/birth framework. And says:
“Good mothers sacrifice themselves.” Women who say:
“Strong mothers, empowered mothers powerful mothers and healthy mothers
are good mothers”, often shout into this world
that does not understand them. And yet it makes
such sense. The hand that rocks the cradle
rules the world. If that hand is sad,
if that hand is damaged, then the product
that steps from that cradle will be damaged
and will be sad and will shape our society
in a different way. So we have got
to get to groups with the different ways
that we look at childbirth. Subtitles by

  1. I was damaged by my first completely unnecessary birth interventions which ended in a forced forceps delivery of my eldest daughter where I was denied any autonomy over my own body and treated like a "piece of meat". Second time around I chose a home birth under the care of two beautiful independent midwives, I was such a better mother to my second daughter because I did not have to live with constant nightmares and flashbacks of the birth abuse  I experienced under private obstetric "care- (let's face it that is what it is- if someone puts a hand in a woman's vagina without her consent on the street they would be charged with sexual assault yet health care providers at hospital labour wards in this country get away with pretty much anything these days including forced medical procedures to birthing women!)

  2. I had a c section with my first and now want to have natural with my second pregnant now I look at child birth like a c section is not natural I think natural is better for you and baby because its as pure as it gets

  3. There is so much truth in what Dahlen says and there's so much compassion in her voice. It brings me to tears every time I hear her voice.
