Helping Patients Better Control High Blood Pressure

Telehealth is very attractive to patients,
it’s convenient and it offers options for people who live long distances from hospitals
and clinics, and now we have the technology available for patients to send their home
blood pressures in through telemonitoring devices, but this technology is still expensive
and it’s not widely available. This study is going to help us understand
if telehealth offers an edge over clinic-based care and helps us provide the best possible
care for patients. Our study is comparing two different ways
to organize care for patients with high blood pressure. The first method uses best practice, but in
a fairly traditional, face-to-face manner where doctors and medical assistants are working
together with patients in the clinic. The second method adds in telehealth care
coordinated by a clinical pharmacist or nurse practitioner. That person can work with the patient who
is sending their blood pressure measurements from home using a telemonitor, and that way,
their treatment can be adjusted without the need for face-to-face visits. Previous research has shown that a healthcare
team approach is one of the most effective ways to help patients get their high blood
pressure under control, and both of the, the methods that we’re studying have good evidence
backed up behind them, but they’ve never been compared directly to each other, so if we
compare them in this study, this is going to help us understand whether telehealth offers
an edge over clinic based care.
