Matt Chandler – Sermon on Abortion

one that I want to go to a little bit more of a specific topic and and it's it's it's one thing that I heard you preach on I think maybe about a year and a half ago that I never heard anyone have the guts to say from the pulpit or really cover in this way and I think it was around the time of there was something that was happening with you neither Roe vs. Wade or something like that and you and you you kind of put it like this that if you if you're gonna be a one-issue voter yeah then and and if you believe that life starts in the womb there's that's the issue to be a of one-issue voter on right if there's this mass genocide going on maybe you can kind of unpack that and explain that a little bit well I think I have I don't think I have deep deep deep convictions intellectually and spiritually and biblically with abortion and and I think when we talk about abortion we never need to talk about abortion in a way that we wouldn't talk about abortion if we were sitting across the table from someone who had one or who had paid for one or forced one on a girlfriend or wife or whatever so I I want to with compassionate conviction address this subject and and so I do it every year so at least once a year and then on on big years where it boating I almost always want to talk about how how the Christian should approach politics and so they in in this issue in particular I think I want to be real straight about the fact that you can be pro-life and be completely incompetent as a politician I mean you can literally just be pro-life and have no business being in public office no business being in any kind of leadership role or but but at the same time at the same time we must not if we believe what the Bible says about when life begins and what life is and the and listen even let's let's do this cuz I don't know who all even if we just want to look at this scientific we need to walk away from the Bible if we can just look at it scientifically and science now I mean you you have the arguments around abortion are starting to change even in the sermon I preached last year showed this in kind of secular articles and media's where science is now proven hey this has a heartbeat this has brainwaves this kidneys are functioning breathing this little baby is and so now it's whose life is more important kind of argumentation which historically speaking is crazy and and so if we believe that believer unbeliever Christian not Christian if we believe that life begins at conception in the womb and science backs us up and I believe it does then to vote for someone who actively advocates for the murder of human beings is unconscionable I mean I just think it's madness and so now the tricky part the more the bigger ethical dilemma is what happens when both candidates support choice over and so in that in that moment I don't think the Christian the believer should ever retreat from the polls I think you've got to find the one who has a better position on the issue and so if you don't have one that wants it all gone but you have one that wants it to be more difficult to get then then I think we back that guy in in viewing the whole of his political abilities or her political abilities either way I think one of the things that that really did stand out to me in that sermon is you've been pretty open I mean you're not you don't talk politics from the pulpit rarely and in you know I think that would that would surprise a lot of people given where you are you're in the you're in Dallas Texas you know everyone here has you know you know you know card-carrying Republican with a gun right and how do you first of all why have you guarded against that and how do you guard against that yeah well first and foremost what I want to do is I don't think either party just to be fair and we'll just let you know let the comment sections continue I don't think either either party has kind of dialed in on God's view of human flourishing and so I feel like if I'm if I'm gonna take a party-line in regards to politics I'm going to not be able to appeal to the sensibilities of the other party members and and just and we're seeing this right now we're seeing they just can't work together can't even thing you almost stand against it because the other is for it and and I think when you're talking about what the Word of God has to say there's no space for that and so I I won't back a party but what I will do is show you from the Word of God what's right good and true according to the creator of all things and so like if you if you take when when I tackle life every year so anytime I tackle life like everybody kind of goes oh gosh everybody brace for the emails brace for the you know brace for somebody to get frustrated race for and it's never happened like if anything across the aisles I mean I've just got affirmation I've got a brother that was bold and helpful even from you know our here in Dallas our small little group of Democrats one guy in particular that gosh she gets so Rast here but I mean they're like put stuff in his yard and like brother you're gonna get vandalized but but even even in my conversations with this man his name's John I mean John was like that's that's one of the best messages I've ever heard and and so now if I would have made that a political issue then I mean I guarantee he'd have felt isolated he'd have felt and so I'm just not gonna get in that world what I'm gonna do is preach from the Word of God God's command on us to be generous towards the poor and the needy I'm going to preach that the gospel would drive us to care for the widow and orphan in their distress and I'm gonna preach life and and on and on and on and so ultimately I found that by being a Bible man rather than a party man that I can preach truth into both parties right and so the second I think I ID self-identify then then I just I've demoed that bridge yeah but at the same time I want to say be involved in the political pop you know process don't you have a Christian responsibility to be a good citizen so you need to know what the issues are you need like I'm hopeful very hopeful that at the time of this our church is aware of how huge of a weakness is with the Supreme Court you know I have just a bit of a session left you know by the end of the week and we'll have massive decisions rolling out this week on the on Hobby Lobby and there you know argument of conscience against having to pay for abortive medicines for their employees that's gonna be a huge so I'm hopeful that the people of the village church know that our prayerful about that and and just are dialed in to what's going on in in regards to politics in this country

  1. Our individual DNA process is a continuous process, unfurling from the moment of conception. There is no later stage of our existence that is not dependent on earlier stages of our existence, as a continuous entity in space and time. Our DNA process is continuous in both space and time from the moment of our conception, to the moment of our death.

Acceptance, rationalization of the termination of an already unfurling DNA process, once invited to unfurl, requires the irrational acceptance of a temporal bias. In the continuum of space/time, that continuously unfurling DNA process is not a complete individual human 'yet.' That is because we are not regarding that human over the complete time-space continuum that it exists in. But, the only thing required to see the complete individual human is the passage of time.

We are of course much more than our unfurling DNA processes, but whatever we are, the basis of our life, cannot exist without the unmolested possession of that unfurling DNA process.

The fetus is a concrete example of a new individual DNA process, unfurling. There is and has been a conflict to define the most fundamental aspect of an individual — the term of its existence. The resolution of this conflict — between the newest individual and others — is resolved by others, based on whatever philosophical or moral guidance they bring to the conflict. The rationalizations in support of abortion boil down to the convenience of the others, based mostly on a shaky temporal bias that is permitted to stand, unquestioned.

  2. Sorry i dont think one sin is worse than another. Certainly not one sinner. Abortion is bad. Be involved with the political arguments and be guided by the Spirit not your pastor. (Sorry Matt – love ya)

  3. A Baby is a gift from God, abortion is a selfish act of murder, period! When we allow abortions to be the norm we lose all regard for human life and lose site of right and wrong! We cease to have a conscience which is evident in our youth today 🙁

  4. Conservatives, never vandalize somebody stuff because you disagree with them. Leave terrible behavior for the other side. Even if they put up something unbelievably evil, actually let them say what they want to say their Ideas speak for themself

  5. Hitler was a socialist. Donna a lot of people on socialized healthcare and some people want all of America to be socialized, that’s fine what you want but please don’t vote for Hitler because you like his socialist party, don’t vote for him because he wants to exterminate certain races people with sexual preferences and people with certain believes and disabilities. If you are going to be a one issue voter never vote for people who advocate for the choice to kill your child at any stage of human development. Sorry that only leaves you with Republicans to choose for, maybe there’s a correlation to their horrible policies of economics and all others with their policy of having no value for human life. Sorry to trash atheist without them being able to defend themselves but they tend to fall to the left of politics much more often in the right and religious people of all strides who believes human value and morality comes from God not nature tend to vote for the right.

  6. Call thing people don’t want to talk about heart issues like these are doing so for good reasons I do think it’s very important love people focus on how the Holy Spirit to change us. But there is probably going to be 100 years from now. And 150 years ago if Christians did and said nothing about slavery and now it has the most detestable part of American history, it’s going to affect Christians now. Just like Paul bringing up the crusades could be a jab in Christianity now. If we were silent while America alone kills 1million fetuses a year and in the future that’s viewed as barbaric and horrible and evil as it should be, what stance to Christians want to have taken. Same thing with civil rights, Christian sit by and let black people get mistreated and discriminated against by the government stead of having equal rights how western civilization was intended, how would that affect us and our ministry 60 years later

  7. chandler is just like wishing, and bad advice.. Christians don't vote, less say some real christian candidate was to be the candidate but hey what does chandler know about the real issue he should be preaching Christ's Kinship ? well he knows nothing of that,, hes just another preacher in a govt state duo beast system, like most in his class they know nothing about politryx or ekklesia…

  8. I pray the God of Israel Jesus Christ destroys all abortionists and pro abortionists like they have destroyed 60+million children.

  9. I do understand conservatives, Christians, and even pastors setting aside the Bible in favor of a naturalistic argument against abortion. The idea is that the heathen will not find Scripture compelling and so we have to reason with them on their level.
But there's so much wrong with this argument.
Firstly, according to Pew Research, 71% of Americans consider themselves to be Christian. That's an overwhelming majority of our nation who should find the Word of God utterly compelling.
Secondly, the results for adopting the naturalist's worldview in order to persuade a "pro-choice" person that abortion is murder are very poor.
Thirdly, the Word of God is powerful. We really need to stop coming up with our own plans, using our own wisdom and our own strength. Preach the Word of God! If we don't win God's way we're not going to win at all.

  10. So if abortion is murder then what punishment should be given to a person who did an abortion? Should she be given a "life sentence"?

  11. Outlawing reproductive options, thus 'saving' millions of unwanted impregnations, while seemingly compassionate, will add billions of people to our rapidly expanding over-populated species. This will result in far more human death and misery than the abortions; not even close And, even worse, will cause misery, death, and extinction of millions of other innocent species.
If we are unable to manage our species in an ethical balance with the rest of life we share this planet with, then we need to leave; one way or another.

  12. It's only abortion if you take her to a doctor. If you push her down the stairs that's just a misscarage 😀LOOP HOLE!!

  13. Abortion is the termination of a pregnancy and not the killing of the unborn and fetuses are not babies. Any woman has the right to abort the same way you have the right to remove an unwelcomed guest from your property, it was never about whether the fetus has the right to life

  14. I'm not a mom, but I would rather be dead than abort my own child. I would rather die sacrificing my life for my baby and go to heaven than to go to hell for abortion. Hell is scary! Is committing one sin really worth your soul?

  15. Just had this pop up after watching another video. I've thought Matt was spot on with everything I've watched him say to date. But his counsel to Christians to vote for the "Lesser of 2 Evils" and not pull back from the polls is surprising to me. Where is that Biblical? Where does God tell His People to ever support one who endorses and supports Murder?

Extrapolate that out and that thinking says one should vote for the False Prophet instead of the Anti-Christ. Huh??

  16. Matt you have to hit it morally too!! morally it's not right to kill the most innocent thing on earth and infant

  17. I thought his statement beginning at 1:18 was interesting. Either he is lying or highly misinformed. He states that nearly HALF of abortions are performed after 21 weeks. Well, initially when I heard this off the top of my head I knew that was bullcrap, mostly because most states have laws against abortions after 20 weeks and I don't think even the most liberal person would be loving this. Did a quick search to double check and found out that abortions after 20+ weeks are 1% OF ALL ABORTIONS LOL. Now, other than his authoritarian tone as a speaker of God, I can get on board with some of what he is saying. But, what I can't stand with crowds like this are their deafening silence when it comes to U.S. foreign policy. He makes the claim that abortion is about convenience and basically selfishness (in some cases it is), but isn't this also true to the Christian that says nothing when their government murders innocent people daily? Women and children. As a Christian I should be consistent with my pledge to truth, justice and peace…condemning ALL acts of violence and aggression, even if speaking out is NOT CONVENIENT. RANT OVER.

  18. I've heard stories where they are trying to go where you can "abort" your child up to two years of age. Of course I totally disagree.

  19. Don't believe something just because it's in the Bible.  That's like believing in gravity because it's in the physics text book.  The Bible was written by men, specifically by poets that have a tendency to embellish, to explain what they knew and believed about God; it would be like building a robot and having it write its own instruction manual.  The Bible is there to introduce you to God and open your mind to his awesomeness, but please base your beliefs on what you know in your mind and heart to be true, don't just adopt the beliefs of other men just because they're all grouped into one convenient collection.
