Pregnant Woman Falsely Accused Of Shoplifting In North Carolina

PREGNANT, HE DIDN’T BELIEVE HER. WE REPORT ON WHAT THE OFFICER DID NEXT WHICH ONLY MADE IT WORSE. Reporter: CHERYL BAITS IS 34 WEEKS PREGNANT, APPARENTLY THAT WAS NOT SO OBVIOUS TO A POLICE OFFICER IN PINEVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA. HE ASKED WHAT WAS UNDER MY SHIRT. INITIALLY, I SHOT HE WAS JOKING SO MY RESPONSE FIRST WAS TWINS. Reporter: BAITS WAS DOING BACK TO SCHOOL SHOPPING AT THIS STAPLES. HAND SANITIZER. THEN A POLICE OFFICER WHO WAS MONITORING THE STORE APPROACHED ME AND INSISTED THAT HE WANTED TO SPEAK WITH ME. Reporter: WHEN SHE TOLD HIM HE WAS PREGNANT, SHE SAYS HE DIDN’T BELIEVE HER. AT THAT POINT, TO AVOID HIM ASKING ME AGAIN, I LIFTED MY SHIRT JUST A LITTLE BIT, EXPOSED MY BELLY SO HE COULD SEE I’M JUST A REGULAR PERSON BUYING SCHOOL SUPPLIES. Reporter: POLICE SAY A STAPLES MANAGER ASKED THE OFFICER TO SPEAK WITH HER BECAUSE THEY BELIEVED SHE COULD HAVE BEEN CONCEALING MERCHANDISE. WHEN I CONFRONTED HER, SHE ADMITTED THAT PEOPLE IN THE PAST HAVE PUT A LOT OF MERCHANDISE IN THEIR CLOTHES. NO MOM SHOULD HAVE TO GO THROUGH THAT. Reporter: THE MANAGER APOLOGIZED AND REFUNDED HER FOR THE PURCHASES.
