Teina Pora lawyer calls for creation of miscarriages of justice group

Teina Pora’s lawyer says the creation of a group to review
apparent miscarriages of justice would help avoid a repeat
of Mr Pora’s experience. The now 42-year-old was wrongfully imprisoned
for murder and rape 25 years ago. And yesterday, Justice Minister
Andrew Little announced he’ll get close to an extra
million dollars added to his compensation package,
to account for inflation. The Government wants to set up
a Criminal Cases Review Commission, an independent body
that would investigate claims of wrongful conviction. Mr Pora’s lawyer says such a body would have seen
Teina get justice much sooner. Teina Pora will now receive
a total of $3.5m in compensation for wrongful imprisonment
of 20 years.
