Women Suffered Miscarriages After Moving Into Homes With Formaldehyde Joists


THE BIG STORIES FROM JEFFERSON COUNTY, DOUGLAS COUNTY AND COLORADO SPRINGS. WE BEGIN TONIGHT WITH AN EXPLOSIVE NEW DEVELOPMENT IN A FORMALDEHYDE SCARE INVOLVING NEW HOMES ACROSS THE FRONT RANGE. TWO WOMEN HAVE COME FORWARD SAYING THE CONTAMINATION HAS PLAYED A ROLE IN THEIR MISCARRIAGES. THEY JOIN HUNDREDS OF FAMILIES TAKING LEGAL ACTION. KAREN IS LIVE TONIGHT. Reporter: THESE TWO WOMEN WERE COMPLETE STRANGERS BEFORE TODAY. ONE LIVES IN NORTHERN COLORADO AND THE OTHER RIGHT HERE IN THE METRO AREA. BOTH WERE PREGNANT WHEN THEY MOVED INTO THEIR HOMES. BOTH WOULD LATER FIND OUT THAT THE FORMALDEHYDE WAS INSIDE. WHEN YOU ARE PREGNANT BEING AT HOME, YOU WOULD THINK IT WOULD BE THE SAFEST PLACE TO BE. IT TURNS OUT IT WASN’T. Reporter: DISCOVERY BOTH WOMEN WOULD MAKE AFTER LEARNING THEIR NEWLY BUILT HOMES WERE FILLED WITH HIGH LEVELS OF FORMALDEHYDE. ALMOST IMMEDIATELY THERE WERE CONCERNS. MAINLY WITH THEIR BASEMENTS. WE TOLD THE CONSTRUCTION MANAGER WHAT IS THIS WEIRD SMELL. HE SAID IT IS A NORMAL NEW HOUSE SMELL. Reporter: WITH THE REASSURANCE FROM THEIR BUILDERS THEY MOVED IN. AFTER SETTLING INTO THEIR NEW LIVES, WEEKS INSIDE THESE HOMES, THEY WERE TOLD THERE WAS A PROBLEM. THE FLOOR JOISTS WERE RECALLED. OVER FEARS THEY MAY BE SEEPING FORMALDEHYDE. YOU WERE GOING TO THINK MIGHT GOING TO BE ABLE TO LIVE IN THIS HOUSE. Reporter: ADDING TO THOSE WORRIES BOTH WOMEN WERE APPROACHING THE END OF THEIR FIRST TRIMESTER.
